NTS > Projects > Voice Over IP Voice Over IPNTS strategy, direction and project outlineThe Office of Information Technology (OIT) is embarking on a Voice over IP(VoIP) initiative using Aastra/Intecom technology in order to utilize our current Private Branch Exchange (PBX) telecommunications system on the Twin Cities campus. Installing VoIP communication infrastructure allows OIT to provide voice services to University locations that are unsupported by traditional telephone service. This project is providing VoIP service to several University organizations that have requested inclusion in the University communications infrastructure, while saving on costs associated with Centrex and Long Distance services. VoIP implementation is not meant to replace traditional telephone service on the Twin Cities campus. It is a means by which places such as Rochester, Arboretum, Extension Services, and other off-site locations may benefit from shared infrastructural resources. Please direct questions about this project to nts-voip@umn.edu. GeneralWith technology improvements, VoIP continues to become more cost effective and reliable. It is a primary direction of all leading voice technology manufacturers' research and development efforts. OIT's strategy for the implementation of VoIP is to ensure that this exciting new technology integrates successfully to the University's existing telecommunication infrastructure, recognizing the advantages and challenges for both of the University's separate voice and data networks. We plan to implement this technology in a prudent and dependable manner, using products that provide long-term value and are scalable for use throughout the University's Twin Cities campus when our present voice communication system is retired. |
