NEW Panasonic Cordless
Panasonic Cordless Guide
Place the base unit in a high and central location, avoiding obstructions such as walls. Avoid electrical appliances such as TVs, computers or another cordless phone. Raise both antennas.
Important: The base station telephone base cord must be plugged into an analog (single line) telephone jack. Do not plug the base station into a digital (multi-line) telephone jack. If you are uncertain what type of jack you have, please call the 1-HELP at 612-301-4357.
A rechargeable Ni-Cd battery powers the handset. Charge the battery for about 6 hours before initial use.
There are two important mode settings that you must set in order to use this phone on-campus. These are "Dialing Mode" and "Line Mode." Dialing mode must be set to "Tone" (page 18 of your manual), as all on-campus telephone service is touchtone service. Line mode must be set to "B" (page 57 of your manual), as your telephone service is "low-voltage" and provided through the University's PBX. (This includes all 624-, 625-, 626- and 301- phone numbers.) If you are an off-campus user, you receive phone service through a Centrex system, which could also be considered a PBX. Set line mode on your phone to the "B" setting, as well.
There are many programmable features available on this cordless phone. This User Guide only covers the most basic functions in relationship to the University's phone system. Each phone will come with a manufacturer's User Manual that covers all features specific to this telephone. Please refer to it for any desired telephone feature not covered within this guide. If you have misplaced the user guide that came with your Panasonic KX-TG5566, Panasonic has an Online User Guide
NTS also provides an on-line User Guide for single line phones, such as this cordless phone. Please go to the STE User's Guide for assistance with University telephone system features, such as system hold, call forwarding, conference or 3-way calling, etc.
When 911 is called from either the base station or the cordless handsets, a building and room number is sent to the emergency responder. This information is taken from the NTS jack number that the base station is plugged into. If a cordless handset is used to call 911, it is critical that the caller take steps to get the emergency responder from the location of the base station to the actual location of the emergency (verbal instructions during the call, and when possible, a person waiting at the base station to guide the responder to the emergency).
When placing a call to a number outside of the University of Minnesota telephone system, please dial [8] for an outside line. To report a fire, medical or other emergency, dial [9] [1] [1] (do not dial [8] first) to reach the University of Minnesota Police Department.

- If the transferring part remains on the call to announce it, press [TALK], [SPEAKERPHONE] or [HOLD] ([INTERCOM]). If the transferring party hangs up before you answer the call (or page), press [TALK] or [SPEAKERPHONE] to answer the call.
- To end the Intercom Call, press [OFF].
When a Transferred Call is being received, the base unit rings and the [INTERCOM/TRANSFER] indicator light flashes.

- Two more extensions can join the conference call if all other extensions are not being used. To join the conference call, press [TALK] or [SPEAKERPHONE].
- Any handset and/or the base station may join a call (up to a total of 5 parties on a call, including the outside calls, base station and handsets) by pressing [TALK] or [SPEAKERPHONE]. This is referred to as "Call Share".
- You may activate "Call Privacy" during a call by pressing the left soft key ([PRIVACY]) on the handset or [PRIVACY] on the base station. This will prevent others from using the "Call Share" feature. This is only on a pre-call basis.
- The above instructions only involve conference calls between one outside party (an outside caller or another University telephone), the base unit and the handsets. If you wish to conference between this phone and other University phones and/or an outside party, you must use University features. These can be accessed via the [FLASH] button and feature codes. Please review the section on the [FLASH] button for more information.
All features discussed up to this point are specific to this telephone only. For example, the [HOLD] button on the phone will provide a quiet hold at the telephone set, rather than music-on-hold as is often used in the University phone system.
You may still access all University features, such as system hold, through the use of the [FLASH] button and feature codes, as you would with any standard single-line telephone. Information on these features is located on our Phone Online Guide.
The NTS-supported phone that you will be able to purchase does not include the Panasonic voicemail component. If it had, this would have resided on the phone itself and would not have given you access to the University voicemail system and its features.
Without this component you will be able to use the University's voicemail system, allowing you to retrieve messages from any telephone location, forward messages to other University voicemail users, send a single message to distribution groups, etc.
We will not be able to provide a voicemail light on the phone to alert you to messages. You will, however, continue to be able to access your mailbox directly from the base station or handset by getting dial tone and pressing [*] [5].
The serial number of the base station and all handsets, plus the telephone number, building location and your username (or department name), must be registered with NTS in order to receive support for these phones.
If, at any time, the phone is moved to another location and/or telephone number, both the old and new locations (building and jack), if applicable, and old and new telephone numbers, must be registered with NTS.
It is expected that this equipment will be used in a responsible manner. Damage to the base station, handsets or chargers that is caused by the user, either intentionally or accidentally, is not covered through NTS support.
Battery replacements are not covered through NTS support, except in the case of an original battery (accompanying the equipment at the time of purchase) that is faulty. In the case of a faulty battery, NTS will provide a replacement for up to one year from the purchase of the unit.
NTS will provide maintenance support for these phones for a three-year period starting on the date of purchase (with the exception of batteries as noted above). If Panasonic discontinues any of these models, NTS will not be able to continue maintenance support of that particular model.
