Guidelines for 800 MHz Users

Time requests from a single research group for more than 25% of the total time over a three-month period will receive a lower priority in scheduling. Every request for 800 time should include a list of the experiments proposed and the estimated time for each. A comment box is provided on the web page request form for this purpose. Requests should also indicate stability of the sample, prep time, and/or any information about the urgency of the experiments if possible. Individual research groups should attempt to limit their consecutive time blocks on the 800 to a two-week maximum. Requests for extensive blocks of time on the 800 require special permission from the facility.

NMR time requested is not guaranteed and the schedule is subject to change. Users will be notified of changes in the schedule via email. Users should always check the web schedule for exact dates and times. The facility staff has the discretion to make schedule adjustments on short notice, if necessary, to balance specific requirements, and in an effort to optimize instrument use.

Any user may request time on the 800 even if the schedule is currently filled. The facility staff will attempt to resolve all time requests in a fair and equitable fashion. Users can also sign up on the "seeking time" list posted so other users know they are trying to get time.

If you foresee any necessary changes in your scheduled 800 time, please notify facility personnel ASAP. Please copy all requests for changes in the 800 schedule in writing via email. A user list with phone numbers and email addresses will be posted next the 800 so other users can be contacted quickly if time opens up. Cancellation protocol involves notifying staff if possible and/or posting a note the web site. The user should also check the list for users seeking time list posted and/or try to contact the next user on the schedule. Questions about conflicts or changes in the schedule can be resolved between individual users or mediated through the facility staff.

Instrument time on the 800 is a scarce and valuable commodity, charges will be levied for all time that is scheduled whether the user utilizes the time or not. Time requests can be cancelled up until five days in advance of the start of the time block without penalty. After that point, unused time will be charged to the scheduled user for the block unless another user assumes the time. To help avoid unused blocks of time, users should plan experiments carefully. They are also encouraged to talk to other members of their lab, other users, and/or the facility personnel to help find someone to take over unused time. They are also encouraged to have back-up experiments planned or find someone in advance who could take over the time if a sample fails.

Users should try to be conscientious about the experiments run on the 800 and efficient in their usage. Users should also try to minimize unused blocks of time between experiments and always check samples at 500 or 600 MHz prior to the scheduled 800 time.

Helium and nitrogen fills on the 800 will be coordinated with the facility staff during breaks between experiments.
