U researchers use stem cells to regenerate muscles in diseased mice
University of Minnesota researchers, using stem cell technology, have sparked muscle regeneration in laboratory mice with a fast-moving form of muscular dystrophy, a disease that severely weakens muscles. They hope their breakthrough in mice will one day lead to more effective treatments for humans who have the disease known as Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy.

Minnesota government won't buy antibacterial products
Starting this June, don't look for antibacterial soap in state government bathrooms. State agencies have been ordered to stop buying products that contain triclosan, a microbe-killing chemical used in everything from plastics to cosmetics to dish soap — but which converts to an environmental toxin after it goes down the drain. The announcement is based off a recent study of triclosan in eight Minnesota lakes, conducted by scientists at the University of Minnesota and the Science Museum of Minnesota.

Pre-med students seek more resources
Applying to medical school isn't tough for students to do on their own, said neuroscience junior Zach Miller. But getting help navigating the prerequisite courses, Medical College Admission Test and letters of recommendation required to apply "is a nice benefit for just about everybody," he said. While University of Minnesota centers and student groups offer resources and networking opportunities for students considering medical school, there is no pre-med major, and some students say pre-med resources are poorly advertised.
