New U.S. growth map means new plants in Minnesota
It's just not as cold as it used to be. And if days like this don't convince you, this should: it's the USDA's new growth zone map, which charts cold temperatures and shows whether certain plants can live through winter…"There are some locations around the metro area where the average January minimum temperature has gone up two or three degrees, which is fairly significant," said University of Minnesota Extension Climatologist Mark Seeley.

NBC Brings “Science of N.H.L. Hockey” to TVs and Classrooms
NBC News and NBC Sports have produced a series of 10 educational segments called “Science of N.H.L. Hockey” that will make their debut during the NBC Sports Network’s coverage of the All-Star festivities this weekend…The scientists are Edward Burger of Williams College, Irene Fonseca of Carnegie Mellon, Jim Gates of the University of Maryland, Robert Gehrz of the University of Minnesota and Patricia Shewokis of Drexel University.

Rotenberg discusses possible Vikings move to TCF Stadium
Although many pieces are yet to fall into place before a new Minnesota Vikings stadium is constructed, the team is in discussions to make the University of Minnesota's TCF Bank Stadium their temporary home during construction if the State Legislature approves a plan for a stadium on the site of the Metrodome. "We've had a number of conversations and meetings but they're still preliminary," University of Minnesota General Counsel Mark Rotenberg told MPR's Steven John Thursday.

Does Right to Work Create Jobs? Experts Aren’t Sure
After Indiana's General Assembly passed a highly contentious right-to-work law this week, Republican House Speaker Brian Bosma triumphantly declared the state "open for business."…A paper by Thomas Holmes, economics professor at the University of Minnesota, studied adjacent counties in right-to-work states and non right-to-work states and found that right-to-work counties tended to produce more manufacturing jobs.

Council recommends additional Heritage funds to fight invasive species
Minnesota may step up its efforts against invasive Asian carp using Outdoor Heritage Funds, one of four legacy amendment funds…Peter Sorensen of the U of M's department of Fisheries, Wildlife and Conservation Biology said the university is testing audio barriers to deter carp, whose sense of hearing is 50-times more acute than other fish.

Why do people get kidnapped in Somalia?
Poverty is stark in Somalia. The country doesn't have a government strong enough to stop the crime.
