Chinese officials to visit Minnesota to observe food safety efforts
A group of government, industry and academic leaders from China will visit Minnesota this week as part of a trip designed to help them examine food safety efforts... The exchange is part of the Global Initiative for Food Systems Leadership, which receives expertise and financial support from many companies, the University of Minnesota and the Food and Agricultural Organization of the United Nations.

Obama 1 Year After Election: US Still Hopeful?
A year ago, crowds gathered in Chicago's Grant Park to celebrate President Obama's election victory... "There's a kind of realism that's taken over, that 'the change you can believe in' -- people have woken up and seen that as kind of a talking point, and I think there's some disappointment, some deflation," Lawrence Jacobs, director of the Center for the Study of Politics and Governance at the University of Minnesota, told USA Today .

Five More Pigs Found with H1N1 Virus
The National Veterinary Services Laboratory confirmed five more pigs from the Minnesota and South Dakota with the H1N1 virus... “The fair setting was investigated because during 2005 to 2008, the Center for Disease Control and state and local health partners had identified a number of sporadic cases of swine influenza infection where the infected person had most likely been exposed at a fair or other public setting,” said Jeff Bender, director of the International Cooperative Zoonotic Influenza Research Center (ICZIRC) at the University of Minnesota, which is funding the study.

U of M piling up stimulus funds with $211M so far
A team of University of Minnesota researchers have been awarded $2.2 million grant from the federal stimulus bill to study whether certain bacteria can be used to produce biofuels, bringing the U a total of $211 million so far in federal stimulus funds.

Throughout the Twin Cities, new federal economic recovery and housing initiatives are expanding the capacity of community development corporations (CDCs) and other community agencies to undertake much needed reconstruction and rehabilitation projects... Earlier this year, MnBest Enterprises was able to use the loan guaranty for a credit line to finance its work for several local agencies including the Minneapolis Public Housing Authority and the University of Minnesota.

Minnesota Group Pushes 'Good Samaritan' Rule
Students at the University of Minnesota are pushing for a new policy that might set them apart from their Big Ten rivals... "We want students to call," University of Minnesota Police Deputy Chief Chuck Miner told the Daily. "Our primary focus is to get them medical attention."

The USDA, Animal and Plant Inspection Service (APHIS), and the Indiana State Board of Animal Health (BOAH) are conducting a comprehensive epidemiological investigation of the event... On 22 October samples from sows experiencing influenza-like illness at the facility were submitted to the University of Minnesota Laboratory for evaluation by the farm’s attending veterinarian(s).

Commercial swine samples test positive for H1N1
According to a Nov. 2 list of pandemic H1N1 influenza presumptive and confirmed results, four swine samples collected in Indiana as part of the U.S. Department of Agriculture National Swine Influenza Virus Surveillance Plan has been confirmed positive for the virus, marking the first time the pandemic H1N1 strain has been found in commercial swine... on Oct. 29, presumptive detection of 2009 H1N1 was reported to the Animal & Plant Health Inspection Service and laboratory samples were submitted to the National Veterinary Services Laboratories; on Nov. 2, pandemic H1N1 virus was confirmed.
