Fracture Critical
At rush hour on August 1, 2007, the 1,907-foot-long I-35W Bridge near downtown Minneapolis fell into the Mississippi River, killing 13 people, injuring 145 more, severing a key link in the Interstate system, and costing over $300 million in damages and for construction of a new bridge... Thomas Fisher is dean of the College of Design at the University of Minnesota.

U of M project wins energy grant
They've been called long shots... innovative energy initiatives ... extreme research... And a University of Minnesota project is among the 37 winners nationwide, scoring $2.2 million for deploying bacteria to produce a flow of hydrocarbon fuel directly from sunlight and CO2... The university team is led by Prof. Larry Wackett of the College of Biological Sciences.

After net neutrality, will we need "Google neutrality?"
The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has mounted a recent push to turn network neutrality "principles" into official regulations, and in doing so has stirred up the net neutrality hornet's nest once again... Odlyzko himself is an internationally recognized expert on network economics who is based at the University of Minnesota and repeatedly puts the kibosh on the idea that networks are about to drown beneath some "exaflood" of data, or that network upgrades are truly expensive.
