Biofuel Showdown: Should Domestic Ethanol Producers Pay for Deforestation Abroad?
After a fierce battle over agricultural incentives in a landmark climate bill, Congress plans to ask the National Academy of Sciences to study how biofuel production in the Midwest can shift food production abroad, stimulating a wave of deforestation... David Tilman, an ecologist at the University of Minnesota, who recently chaired a panel on alternative fuels for the National Research Council in Washington, D.C., says that the new standards should encourage the use of the half billion tons of biomass, such as forest slash, that is already available per annum.

Surgeons are healing broken smiles in Armenia this week
A team of medical professionals headed by Dr. Raj Sarpal, a cardiac anesthesiologist from the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis, is in Yerevan to perform free reconstructive surgery on 50 to 55 Armenian children and young adults with cleft lip and cleft palate birth defects.

Georges Han, a recovered patient now studying at the University of Minnesota for a Ph.D. in psychology, describes borderline personality disorder as "a serious psychiatric disorder involving a pervasive sense of emptiness, impulsivity, difficulty with emotions, transient stress-induced psychosis and frequent suicidal thoughts or attempts."

Answers about water-absorbing gels
There is a theory that using water-absorbing gels (also called hydrogels) will help to retain moisture in your container gardens and hanging baskets, so that they will need watering less often... Jeff Gillman, associate professor of horticulture at the University of Minnesota, has done research on these water absorbing gels and has this to say on the subject.

Nature Center hires executive director

Should ophthalmology adopt the practice of intracameral prophylaxis during cataract/refractive surgery?
While there have certainly been a number of concerns raised with the methodology and results of the European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons endophthalmitis study, it did clearly show that patients who received intracameral cefuroxime had a lower incidence of endophthalmitis than patients who did not receive intracameral cefuroxime or who received topical antibiotics... Stephen S. Lane, MD, is a clinical professor of ophthalmology at the University of Minnesota, St. Paul.
