U of M physics doctoral student Brian Skinner's paper, "The Price of Anarchy in Basketball," was a hit at the 2010 MIT Sloan Sports Analytics Conference in early March.

Expert Perspectives: The price of anarchy in basketball and statistical analysis in sports

University of Minnesota PhD candidate Brian Skinner explains his new paper called "The Price of Anarchy in Basketball" in this video. Brian presented the research at the MIT Sloan Sports Analytics Conference (presented by ESPN) in March for a large group of influential professionals in the sports industry and beyond.

The paper wrestles with the reality that giving the ball to your best offensive player every time down the floor may not be the best offensive strategy, utilizing examples from efficient traffic models to explain how the game of basketball can be more effectively played. It was published in the Journal of Quantitative Analysis in Sport.
