U of M Moment - Are there more natural disasters today than ever before?
The recent earthquakes in Haiti and Chile have prompted many to ask – are there more natural disasters today than previous points in human history? Jamie Stephenson from the University of Minnesota’s Center for Early Modern History studies the history of natural disasters and says it is certain aspects of modern life that have caused the perception of this increased frequency.
Stephenson also says that modern advances in communication have led to an increased focus on the sometimes-gory results of these disasters.
