How loud can 306 gophers be? Very loud when they're the 306 Golden Gopher musicians of the University of Minnesota Marching Band--the largest marching band ever in the history of the University.

"Our band this year is huge," says Jerry Luckhardt, Marching Band director since 1997. "I think we're using just about every uniform on the racks. But the band is more than just large--it's outstanding. The quality of our students and the student leadership within the band is fantastic."

While a portion of marching band students are music students, most of the members represent majors from across the University. "The marching band is a place where future music teachers, engineers, artists, and business people all come together to celebrate their love of music," says Luckhardt.

"There's nothing like the energy and excitement of a live recording, and it's even more powerful when the artist is a 306-piece marching band," says Luckhardt.

The band recently released its latest compact disc, entitled "Maroon and Gold LIVE." The CD features music recorded last November during the band's annual concerts at Northrop Memorial Auditorium.

"We haven't released a recording of our concerts in more than a decade," says Luckhardt. "There's nothing like the energy and excitement of a live recording, and it's even more powerful when the artist is a 306-piece marching band."

In addition to the new CD, fans can also purchase their very own limited edition Goldy Gopher Marching Band Bobblehead doll. Both the doll and CD are available at the U Bookstores and all Gold Country locations.

Fans have lots of opportunities to watch and hear the band throughout the football season. In addition to performances at all home Gopher football games, the band marches from the U to the Dome one hour before kickoff for its outside pregame show. Fans can also catch the band at the annual Homecoming parade on campus, as well as at the band's annual concerts in Northrop Auditorium on November 20 and 21.

And like many Golden Gopher fans, the band is excited about the opportunity of someday playing in a new on-campus stadium. As Jerry Luckhardt explains, "Anyone who remembers Memorial stadium relishes the memories of the band marching down University Avenue, entering through the processional arch, and then exploding onto the field. It would be wonderful for our students to have that experience again."
