Smokers across the country unite to quit the habit

November 19, 2008

Tomorrow is the American Cancer Societys Great American Smokeout, a day to inspire and encourage smokers to quit the addiction. Although less and less Americans are smoking every year, tobacco use remains the single largest preventable cause of disease and premature death in the United States. A University of Minnesota expert who can talk about kicking the vice is:

Mustafa alAbsi, professor of behavioral medicine at the University of Minnesota, Duluth Medical School

alAbsi studies substance abuse and addictive behaviors and can explain the difficult undertaking of quitting. He can discuss why stress hinders the process and why women tend to have a harder time quitting than men. We have found that stress affects men and women differently when it comes to nicotine addiction and relapse, said alAbsi. alAbsi also studies why people continue to smoke even though they know it is harmful to them.
