Choose Moodle version:

During the 2011-2012 academic year—until August 31, 2012— Both Moodle 1.9 and Moodle 2.0 are available and supported at the University of Minnesota.

If you currently use Moodle 1.9, you are encouraged to continue using 1.9 for Fall Semester 2011. Meanwhile, begin exploring 2.0 and develop your plan to convert your course site(s) in time for Fall 2012.

Contact your local technical support and visit the Moodle 2.0 Upgrade website for additional Moodle upgrade news, support, and learning opportunities.
Also, review the Google site: Moodle Upgrade Updates.

As a quick reference to help you decide which version of Moodle you want to request, review the information below.

  • Available starting August 15, 2011.
  • Recommended for development and conversion (not for teaching!) during Fall Semester 2011.

  • Offers a new set of features, enhancements, and a new navigation interface.
  • Some tools present in 1.9 are not available yet.
  • Does not allow conversion back to the 1.9 format.
  • Use this form to migrate 1.9 courses into 2.0 format (paste the URL of your 1.9 course site in to the Course URL field).

Instructions (applicable to 1.9 and 2.0):

Course instructors can login with the UofM Internet ID, choose a type of the course site, and fill out the site request form.
There are 3 types of course sites: Non-academic, Development and Academic.

  • Non-Academic (aka Training and Collaboration) - A Moodle site used for any general purpose: group collaboration, departmental web-board, internal training, etc.
  • Development - A development site enables you to create prototype course sites and to explore Moodle features and tools. Development site contents can be easily transferred later to a course site. If your class is not yet in the class schedule or has not been assigned a course designator, we recommend this option.
  • Academic - A course site for University academic courses is a site set up to fetch class lists of registered students from the PeopleSoft® system. If you know the course designator and term of your class, we recommend this option.

Designer/Faculty Sponsor Responsibilities:

By requesting a Moodle course site, the requestor and faculty sponsor (when applicable):

  • agree to the policies
  • agree to receive notices of Moodle server maintenance or upgrade activities and to act responsibly when sharing the account, according to FERPA regulations.
  • For student privacy and FERPA reasons, we must be able to verify course instructors in the class schedule. Therefore, if you are not listed in the class schedule as the instructor, or if you have requested a course site for someone else (e.g. you are a TA), we will create the site so you can begin to work on it, but we will not fetch the class list of registered students.
    • If you are the one who will be teaching the course, ask your department to make sure you are listed in Peoplesoft as the instructor of record. Once this is done, let us know, and we will fetch the class list of registered students into your site.
    • If you have requested a course site for someone else (e.g., you are a TA), ask the instructor of record to email us approval to fetch the students.
