Read-only anonymous access with no authentication required index back to index

Read-only anonymous access allows people to browse through Moodle sites in the role of "non-participating" students. Therefore they can see everything, including course materials, forum postings, and database entries, but they can not participate, e.g. post an actual forum entry.

Read-only access does not require any authentication and is completely anonymous, but it may require people to type a password in order to enter the site if an instructor/designer sets it up that way.
Note that read-only anonymous access is NOT the same as the UofM Guest ID access, since the latter is not anonymous, and it requires profile competition and authentication.

If the course designer allows read-only access to a Moodle site without a password, then anyone in world will be able to access the site.

How to allow non-authenticated access:

How to login for anonymous browsing:

  • Go to http://moodle.umn.edu
  • Click the Read-only access button
  • Search for a site and click on its name.
    • You may be required to enter a password (enrollment key). This key should be sent to you by the designer of the site in advance.

Example of a course that allows read-only guest access: Demo Course: Cooking with Chocolate - READ ONLY Access, located in the Demos category.
