Moodle and NetFiles index back to index

NetFiles is a file storage application with collaboration and sharing features, which can be used by students, faculty, and staff to store up to 5 gigabytes of files.

Users can decide to use NetFiles with Moodle if they need to exchange big files, share user-created websites, or reuse the same content in different locations, without the need to update it everywhere.

Using NetFiles with Moodle consists of the following main steps: uploading to NetFiles, sharing the directory, and posting the link to Moodle.  These steps are detailed below:

Step 1 : Create a directory and upload a file to NetFiles

  1. Log in to NetFiles: http://netfiles.umn.edu (activate account if needed)
  2. Click on the New Directory icon at the top of the screen to create a new directory for use with Moodle
  3. Enter the name, and click OK
  4. Click on the name of the directory
  5. Click onthe Upload icon to upload the files

Step 2: Share a file or a whole NetFiles directory via the Ticket system

  • Click on the corresponding Not sharednotshared icon near the directory or file name and on your main NetFiles screen
  • Clickthe Tickets icon at the top of the screen
  • Click Create Ticket and fill out the form:
    • On the dropdown menu, select Advanced
    • Select Read from the Define Permissions fields, unless you really want people to also be able to upload files
    • Select Unlimited or enter the Lifetime of the files, i.e., how long they should be available, for example, until the end of the course
    • Enter a Name; if you wish to password lock the files, choose a password
    • Click OK
  • On the following screen, copy the URL given, as you will need this later. It will look similar to this: https://netfiles.umn.edu/xythoswfs/webui/_xy-4053922_1-t_sTscMUyt

Step 3: Provide a URL to the file or directory in Moodle

  • Go to your Moodle site homepage
  • Click Turn Editing on
  • From the Add a Resource dropdown menu, select Link to a file or website
  • Type a Name, e.g., "Video for Week 2"
  • Paste the URL from the NetFiles ticket into the Location field
  • Click Save Changes
