About

The chat tool allows all course participants to have a real-time synchronous communication.

Moodle chats are text-based and allow users to enter text, post links, insert smiles or emoticons, and simple embedded HTML (such as <b>bold</b> or <i>italics</i> tags) for text styling.

Create a chat

  • Turn on editing mode by clicking on the Turn Editing On button on the course homepage
  • Click the Add an Activity dropdown menu and select Chat
  • Fill out the form:
    • Type in the name and description
    • If you wish to set a date and time to be shown to students, then
      • Enter the date and time in the Next Chat Time fields
      • Set Repeat Chat Sessions to publish the date
      • Note: This does not prevent students from accessing the chat at any other time. You may hide the chat completely by selecting the Hide option in chat settings, or clicking the hide icon on the course homepage.
    • Set the length of time to save chat sessions with the Save Past Sessions dropdown.
    • If you wish to allow students to view previous chat sessions make sure Everyone Can View Past Sessions is set to ' yes'
  • Click the Save changes button

Participate in a chat

  • Click on the chat’s link on the course homepage
  • Read the chat’s description
  • Click on the corresponding link to start the chat
    • If your browser supports JavaScript and frames (or you are unsure) click on the Enter Chat Now link
    • If your browser does not support JavaScript and frames (or the first link did not work), click on Version without frames and JavaScript

Review past sessions

  • Navigate to the chat’s main page (click on chat's link from the site homepage)

  • Select the chat session you wish to review and click on its link

Tech notes

Chat behavior in Moodle can give rather different results for the participants, depending on their browser settings and internet connection. Because of that it is not recommended to use chat tool for the groups of more than 20 concurrent users. University of Minnesota has another stand-alone chat tool, called UMChat (Jabber), which can provide more stable results, and can be used with IM desktop clients such as Gaim or iChat.
