About
The Assignment tool allows instructors to privately collect and grade student work.
Assignments usually have a due date which is automatically added to the Calendar, and a grade which is automatically transferred into the Gradebook.
There are four types of assignments:
Upload a single file
This type of assignment allows each participant to upload a single file, of any type. This might be a Word processor document, or an image, a zipped web site, or anything you ask them to submit.
Once a student assignment has been graded, students may no longer upload revisions to their file.
Online text
This assignment type asks users to type and edit a text, using the normal editing tools. Teachers can grade them online, and even add inline comments or changes. (This Assignment type does the same thing as the old Journal module does)
Offline activity
This is useful when the assignment is performed outside of Moodle. It could be something elsewhere on the web or face-to-face.
Students can see a description of the assignment, but can't upload files or anything. Grading works normally, and students will get notifications of their grades.
Advanced uploading of files
In this assignment students can upload one or more files in any format.
Students may also enter notes describing the submitted files, progress status, or any other text information.
Submission of this type of assignment must be manually finalized by the participant. Instructors can review the current status at any time, unfinished assignments are marked as Draft. Instructors can also revert any ungraded assignment back to draft status.

Add 'Upload a Single File' assignment
- Click the Turn Editing on button on the course homepage
- Choose Upload a Single File from the Add an activity drop down menu. The Assignment set up form will appear.
- Type a name and description
- Choose the Grade's maximum points (the standard grading scale is 1-100)
- Select availability dates
- Available from prevents students from submitting their assignments before this date. Assignment description still will be visible to the students.
- Due date prevents students from submitting their assignments after this date. It will automatically appear in the calendar.
- Prevent late submissions:
- "No" - assignments submitted after the due date will be marked as late, but students will still be able to submit them
- "Yes" - assignment submission will be blocked after the due date
- Allow resubmitting: If you turn this option on, then students will be allowed to resubmit assignments after they have been graded (for you to re-grade).
- Email alerts to teachers: If enabled, then teachers are alerted with a short email whenever students add or update an assignment submission
- Maximum size: Decide on the maximum size of the allowed attachment
- Group Mode: Choose the applicable group mode
- Visible: Decide whether the link should be made visible to students or not
Students will now see the assignment on the course homepage, and it will show up in their gradebook with the point value you have selected. When you enter grades for the assignment, they will be automatically added to the gradebook.
Add 'Advanced Uploading of Files' assignment
- Click the Turn Editing on button on the course homepage
- Choose Advanced Uploading of files from the Add an activity drop down menu. The Assignment set up form will appear.
Download a file submitted by a student:
- Go inside the Assignment area and click View # of submitted assignments link.
- Click on the name of the submitted file to download it locally.
Upload your own file for an individual student (before or after student submits a file):
- Go inside the Assignment area and click View # of submitted assignments link.
- Click Grade link near the name of the student
- In the pop-up window , locate Response files area, click Browse and select your response file
- Click Upload this file button. Your file fill get uploaded and student will be able to grab it form the Assignment area.
Grade Assignment
- Click on the name of the Assignment
- Click the View # submitted assignments link. Grading window will open
- Click on the Grade link opposite a particular student's name. A new window will open containing a feedback area
- Pick the grade for the assignment from the dropdown list in the upper right corner. (You set the scale when you created the assignment.) Below the grade scale, you can type comments
- Click "Save changes" or "Save and show next"

The list of submissions may be sorted by clicking on a particular heading. Clicking twice on the same heading sorts the list in the opposite order. If the table is too large then columns may be collapsed by clicking on the Hide icon next to a particular column heading.
By default, 10 submissions are shown per page, though this may be changed at the bottom of the page.
You may prefer to use "quick grading" by checking the box at the bottom of the submissions page. This enables you to quickly grade multiple assignments all on one page, rather than one by one in a new window. Simply add the grades and comments then when you're done, click "Save all my feedback" at the bottom of the page.
Teaching tips
Group mode and non-editing teachers (TAs):
- In the Separate groups mode:
- if TA is not assigned to any group - cannot see and grade any submissions
- if TA is a member of some group - - can see and grade submissions of his/her group members only
- In the Visible groups and No groups modes:
- TA can see and grade all submissions, no matter what
Tech notes
If you decide to switch from one group mode to another, or if you shuffle members of the group (either students or TAs), make sure to allow some time for this to come into action. In particular circumstances users would not see new settings right away, and they still will have access to their old groups for some time.
This happens because of two things:
- Browser cache - make sure that everyone cleans their browser cache and restart browsers
- Moodle system internal cache - users might need to wait for up to an hour or more for new settings to be refreshed internally, thus they will still have previous access capabilities, even though instructor already put them into a different group
