New features in 1.8

New roles interface

  • Various access settings can now be set for the participants on the course-by-course or individual tool basis.
  • Quick overview of Roles
  • Be careful, as you may accidentally give too much control to your site participants.
  • Note that if you assign a new role to a user, or override any of the roles capabilities, the user has to logout from Moodle system completely and then log back in, in order to see the changes.
  • Most of the time you would not need to use this feature.

New controls for Forums, Databases and Glossaries

  • Some of the controls to the tools in version 1.8 had been moved into the Roles interface.
  • Review this page for explanation on how to:
    • Allow/prohibit participants to start new discussions threads, or reply to posts
    • Allow/prohibit students to grade each other forum postings
    • Prohibit students from submitting database entries
    • Prohibit students from submitting glossary entries

New way to add users to the course site manually

  • Because of the new roles interface, you will notice slight differences in how participants and co-instructors are added manually.
  • In 1.8 - go to Administration > Assign Roles > click Instructors, or Students, or Guests. Search and add people to the role.

New Assignment type: Advanced Uploading of files

  • Allows each participant to upload one or more files in any format.
  • Allows teachers to upload multiple response files. Response files can be also uploaded before submission which can be used to give each participant different file to work with.
  • Participants may also enter notes describing the submitted files, progress status or any other text information.
  • Submission of this type of assignment must be manually finalized by the participant.
  • Teachers can review the current status at any time, unfinished assignments are marked as Draft. Teachers can revert any ungraded assignment back to draft status.
  • See example

New User Profile fields

Such as interests, student organizations, favorite music, etc (go to the Edit profile area to set those, by clicking your name in the upper right corner)

Improvements to the Database module

Template/Field settings can now be saved as presets and shared across a site. One default preset is an Image Gallery: see example.

Improvements to the Wiki module

While student is editing a wiki page it is now locked so that others cannot try to change it at the same time. Teachers can override the lock.

New Themes

Blue, Orange, Green

Experimental - drag and drop feature

Allows easier course development. Note that this feature is experimental and may not be available later. Make sure to use Firefox browser.

  • Go to the Edit profile area and set AJAX and Javascript to Yes.
  • Go to the course homepage, click Turn Editing on, and try to drag and drop blocks, or individual resources/activities, or whole topics - move
