Eric Ravussin, Ph.D., Chief, Division of Health and Performance Enhancement at the Pennington Biomedical Research Center presented a seminar entitled "Role of adiponectin in insulin resistance and muscle mitochondrial biogenesis."  This seminar was co-sponsored by the MN Obesity Center and the Department of Food Science & Nutrition, University of Minnesota.

Tom Baranowski, Ph.D., Department of Pediatric at Baylor College of Medicine, presented a seminar entitled "Behavioral Research with Obese Children."  This seminar was co-sponsored by the MN Obesity Center and the Department of Food Science & Nutrition, University of Minnesota.


March 3 , 2006

Kenneth Carr, Ph.D., Associate Professor of Psychiatry and Pharmacology, at the New York University School of Medicine presented a seminar entitled "Augmentation of Drug Reward by Chronic Food Restriction: Behavioral Evidence and Underlying Mechanisms." This seminar was co- sponsored by the Cancer Center Transdisciplinary Tobacco Use Research Center (TTURC) and the Minnesota Obesity Center.

Michael Devlin, M.D., Associate Professor of Clinical Psychiatry, Columbia University Medical Center, and Clinical Co-Director of the Eating Disorders Research Unit, New York State Psychiatric Institute, presented at the Psychiatry Grand Rounds on “The Treatment of Binge Eating Disorder.”


May 23, 2006

Rowan T. Chlebowski, M.D., Ph.D., Professor of Medicine at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA and Chief, Division of Medical Oncology and Hematology Harbor-UCLA Medical Center presented a seminar entitled "Lifestyle Influence on Breast Cancer Risk and Recurrence."  This seminar was co-sponsored by the Minnesota Obesity Center and the Cancer Center.

Center-Wide Retreat:
The Minnesota Obesity Center held its eighth annual Center-wide Retreat on Monday, September 25, 2006 at the Continuing Education and Conference Center in St. Paul.  This event has increased in popularity over the years. Speakers included:

  • C. Ford Runge, Ph.D., Distinguished McKnight University Professor of Applied Economics and Law, School Lunch Program: Commercial and Political Interests
  • Lorraine Lanningham-Foster, Ph.D., Endocrine Research Unit, Mayo Clinic, Pediatric Obesity:  Applying the NEAT Concept
  • Kerri N. Boutelle, Ph.D., Department of Pediatrics and Adolescent Health, UMN, Learning From the Losers: Adolescents Who Have Lost Weight

The second half of the retreat focused on the Research Interest Clusters which have been reorganized around the Center’s four research cores.  The Cluster leaders provided brief presentations on the objectives of the cluster and how the associated core is able to facilitate with those goals.  The four clusters and leaders are: 

  • Regulation of Energy Metabolism; Howard Towle, Ph.D.
  • Physical Activity and Muscle Metabolism;James Levine, M.D., Ph.D.
  • Obesity Prevention/Intervention: Population Studies; Jennifer Linde, Ph.D.
  • Risk for Eating Disorders and Obesity; Carol Peterson, Ph.D.

 

November 2, 2006

Brian Wansink, Ph.D., of Cornell University gave two seminars: "Mindless Eating: Why We Eat More Than We Think" and "Do Low-Fat Labels Make Us Fat?"  The first seminar took place during the Obesity and Eating Disorders class, and the second was part of the Division of Epidemiology’s weekly seminar series.
