March 3, 2003

David Ludwig, M.D., Ph.D., Department of Medicine, Children's Hospital, Boston, Harvard Medical School, presented a seminar entitled "A Low Glycemic Index Diet in the Treatment of Obesity and Related Complications." Dr. Ludwig met with several Center Participating Investigators during this visit. This event was co-sponsored by the Department of Food Science and Nutrition.

March 5, 2003

Dr. M. Daniel Lane, Department of Biological Chemistry, The Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, presented the 4th Goldberg Lecture in Signal Tranduction and Metabolism. His talk was entitled "The Malonyl-CoA Hypothesis and the Regulation of Energy Metabolism." This event was co-sponsored with the Department of Biochemistry, Molecular Biology and Biophysics.

March 12, 2003

Barbara J. Rolls, Ph.D., Guthrie Chair in Nutrition, College of Health and Human Development, Pennsylvania State University, presented a seminar entitled "Is There an Optimal Dietary Strategy for Weight Management?" Dr. Rolls met with several Center Participating Investigators during this visit. This event was co-sponsored by the Department of Food Science and Nutrition.

May 9, 2003: Center-Wide Retreat

The Minnesota Obesity Center held its fifth annual center-wide retreat. Presentations were made by representatives of research institutions within Minnesota that are affiliated with the Minnesota ONRC, as well as clinicians currently involved in the treatment of obesity from throughout Minnesota. This event has increased in popularity over the years and was very well attended again this year.

July 17, 2003

Moira Golan, Ph.D., The Eating Disorders Intensive Treatment Center, Israel, presented the results of her study on "Parents as the Agent of Change in Childhood Obesity." Dr. Golan led a discussion of data examining parent only interventions for overweight kids, instead of parent plus kids, and treatment programs. Dr. Golan was visiting the University of Minnesota on a sabbatical leave.

September 16, 2003

Michael I. Goran, Ph.D., Institute for Prevention Research, University of Southern California, presented a seminar entitled "Obesity and Insulin resistance in Children." Dr. Goran met with several Center Participating Investigators during this visit. This event was co-sponsored by the Department of Food Science and Nutrition.

October 20 & 21, 2003

Jane Wardle, Ph.D., Department of Epidemiology & Public Health and Department of Psychology at the University College London, visited the Division of Epidemiology, and the Department of Food Science & Nutrition, UMN, to discuss recent research findings. While here, Dr. Wardle presented two seminars:

  1. "Socioeconomic Status and Obesity: Exploring Meanings and Mechanisms," and
  2. "Understanding Children's Food Preferences."

While here, Dr. Wardle met with several Center Participating Investigators. This event was co-sponsored by the Division of Epidemiology and the Department of Food Science & Nutrition.

 

November 17, 2003: Obesity Research Day

The Minnesota Obesity Center sponsored a day long program of current research findings in eating disorders and obesity. Invited speakers were:
