January 29, 2002

James E. Mitchell, M.D., Neuropsychiatric Research Institute, Fargo, North Dakota, presented a 2-part seminar on these two topics: "Follow-up of Gastric Bypass Patients" and "Eating While Driving." While here, Dr. Mitchell guest lectured for the Public Health course on Obesity and Eating Disorders. Dr. Mitchell met with several Center Participating Investigators during this visit. This event was co-sponsored by the Division of Epidemiology.

March 12, 2002

Adam Drewnowski, Ph.D., Department of Nutritional Sciences, University of Washington, presented a seminar entitled "Sugar and fat and eating behaviors." Dr. Drewnowski guest lectured for the Public Health course on Obesity and Eating Disorders. Dr. Drewnowski met with several Center Participating Investigators during this visit. This event was co-sponsored by the Division of Epidemiology.

April 30, 2002

Michael Jacobson, Ph.D., presented a seminar entitled "Nutrition and the politics of food." Dr. Jacobson guest lectured for the Public Health course on Obesity and Eating Disorders. Dr. Jacobson met with several Center Participating Investigators during this visit. This event was co-sponsored by the Division of Epidemiology.

May 13, 2002: Center-Wide Retreat

The Minnesota Obesity Center held its fourth annual center-wide retreat. Presentations were made by Pilot & Feasibility Award recipients, Center Core Directors, and Center Participating Investigators. This event has increased in popularity over the years and was very well attended again this year. The presentations were followed by a buffet luncheon, which allowed people to interact and discuss ideas for potential collaborations and Core usage.

June 26, 2002

Brenda Broussard, RD, MPH, MBA, CDE, Health Care Consultant, Albuquerque, NM, was to present a seminar entitled "Type 2 Diabetes and Obesity: Emerging Epidemics in Native American Children and Youth." Ms. Broussard was scheduled to meet with several Center Participating Investigators during this visit. This seminar was co-sponsored by the Division of Epidemiology. However, this event needed to be rescheduled.

July 15 - 17, 2002

Mary L. Hediger, Ph.D., National Institute of Child Health and Human Development, NIH, presented a lecture entitled "Breastfeeding and Subsequent Risk of Childhood Obesity." This lecture was part of the National Maternal Nutrition Intensive Course presented by Public Health Nutrition, Division of Epidemiology, School of Public Health, and College of Continuing Education Continuing Professional Education, University of Minnesota.

September 12 - 13, 2002

Mayo Clinic: Nutrition in Health & Disease was a Continuing Medical Education course offered to health care professionals for training in comprehensive management of obesity, and the role of nutrition and physical activity in disease prevention and management. Several Center investigators presented at this event.

September 23, 2002

Rudolf Kaaks, Ph.D., Hormones and Cancer Group at the International Agency for Research on Cancer in Lyon, France, presented a seminar entitled "Excess weight, endogenous hormone metabolism and endometrial cancer risk." This event was co-sponsored by the Department of Food Science & Nutrition and the Cancer Center.

October 4, 2002

Gary J. Schwartz, Ph.D., from the Bourne Lab, Weill Medical College, White Plains, NY, presented a seminar entitled "Gut sensations, eating behavior, and energy balance." Dr. Schwartz met with several Center Participating Investigators during this visit. This event was co-sponsored by the Department of Neuroscience.

October 28, 2002

Kibbe Conti, RD, CDE, LN, Nutrition Consultant for Northern Plains Nutrition Consulting in Rapid City, SD, presented at the PUBLIC HEALTH NUTRITION SEMINAR on "The Four Winds Nutrition Model: A New Culturally-Specific Food Guide and Nutrition Approach for Northern Plains Indians." Ms. Conti met with several Center Participating Investigators during this visit. This event was co-sponsored by the Division of Epidemiology.

October 31, 2002

Randy Seeley, Ph.D., University of Cincinnati, presented a seminar entitled "The Influence of Macronutrients on the Regulation of Energy Balance: The New Diet Revolution." Dr. Seeley met with several Center Participating Investigators during this visit. This event was part of the Endocrinology & Diabetes City-Wide Conference and was co-sponsored with the Department of Medicine and the Division of Endocrinology, Diabetes & Metabolism.

November 1, 2002

Kelly D. Brownell, Ph.D., Department of Psychology, Yale University, provided the keynote address for the Third Annual School of Public Health Roundtable "Meeting the Challenge of Obesity: Uniting Public Health Research, Practice and Policy." His talk was entitled "Reversing the Obesity epidemic: Courage in the Face of Crisis." Several Minnesota Obesity Center investigators participated as speakers, moderators and breakout session leaders. This event was co-sponsored by the Minnesota Obesity Center, along with other sponsors.

November 5, 2002

Lorraine Lanningham-Foster, Ph.D., Endocrine Research Unit, Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN, presented a seminar entitled "Energy Expenditure of Simple Daily Activities." This event was co-sponsored by the Department of Food Science & Nutrition.
