April 12. 2000Ormand MacDougald, M.D., University of Michigan Medical School, presented a seminar entitled "Regulation of Adipogenesis by the Wnt Signaling Pathway." This event was co-sponsored by the Department of Biochemistry, Molecular Biology and Biophysics. April 14, 2000Anthony Sclafani, PhD, Brooklyn College of CUNY, presented a seminar entitled "Psychobiology of Food Preferences." This event was co-sponsored by the Department of Neuroscience. May 1, 2000: Center-Wide RetreatThe Minnesota Obesity Center held its second annual center-wide retreat. Presentations were made by the following Pilot & Feasibility Award recipients:
May 26, 2000The 2000 Bollum Symposium in Molecular Biology hosted by the Department of Biochemistry, Molecular Biology and Biophysics (BMBB). The theme of this second annual symposium was "G Protein-coupled Receptors" and featured 3 internationally recognized speakers. The Minnesota Obesity Center provided partial support for Dr. Linda Hickle, Northwestern University, Chicago, IL, who spoke on the role of Ubiquitin in signaling receptor downregulation. June 8, 2000Dr. Walter Kaye, Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Pittsburgh Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic, and research director of the Eating Disorder Program at that institution, was the Dept. of Psychiatry's Pfizer Visiting Professor from Tuesday, June 6, through Friday, June 9, 2000. Dr. Kaye is one of the world's leading researchers in the study of the neurobiology of eating disorders. Dr. Kaye presented a seminar entitled "Appetite Regulation of Eating Disorders." September 19, 2000James O. Hill, PhD, Director of the Clinical Nutrition Research Unit at the University of Colorado, visited the Mayo Clinic in Rochester on September 18 - 20, 2000. He presented a talk entitled "Environmental causes of Obesity" at the Endocrine Research. Dr. HIll presented at Endocrine Grand Rounds on the topic of "Can we win the war on obesity?" October 10, 2000: Obesity Research DayThe Minnesota Obesity Center sponsored a day long program of current findings in obesity. This event was so-sponsored by the University of Minnesota's Office of Continuing Medical Education. Invited speakers were:
October 18, 2000Jay Horton, PhD, Department of Molecular Genetics, University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas, presented a seminar entitled "SREBPs in lipid metabolism and diabetes." This event was co-sponsored with the Department of Biochemistry, Molecular Biology & Biophysics. December 5, 2000Megan McCrory, PhD, from the Jean Mayer USDA HNRC on Aging, visited the Food Science & Nutrition Department and presented a seminar entitled "Procedures for identifying inaccurate reports of energy intake, and analysis of their influence on relationships between diet and BMI." Dr. McCrory visited on Monday and Tuesday, December 4-5, 2000. Dr. McCrory conducts research at Tufts University where she focuses on dietary factors affecting energy intake and body fatness and the relative importance of dietary factors and physical activity in energy regulation. |
