1997 Seminar Series

February 10, 1997

Simone A. French, PhD, University of Minnesota, presented the results of her Pilot & Feasibility Project in a seminar entitled "Agreement Between Survey and Interview Measures of Weight Control Practices in Adolescents." Dr. French conducted this work with support from a Pilot & Feasibility Program Award. This seminar was in conjunction with the launch of the 1997 Pilot & Feasibility Program Call for Proposals.

March 13, 1997

Marsha D. Marcus, PhD, Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic, Pittsburgh, PA, presented a seminar entitled "Binge Eating Disorder." Dr. Marcus is a member of our External Scientific Advisory Committee and was in town for a site visit of the Minnesota Obesity Center.

April 30, 1997

Timothy Ramsey, PhD, Pennington Center, presented a seminar entitled "Porcine Leptin: A Relevance to Animal Agriculture?" This seminar was part of a combined seminar series between the Departments of Veterinary Pathobiology and Food Animal Biotechnology.

May 12, 1997

Susan K. Fried, PhD, Department of Nutritional Sciences, Rutgers University, presented a seminar entitled "Hormonal regulation of leptin expression in human adipose tissues." Dr. Fried is a member of our External Scientific Advisory Committee and was in town for a site visit of the Minnesota Obesity Center.

May 15 - 16, 1997

Claude Bouchard, PhD, spoke on the "Genetic Aspects of Obesity" at the National Conference on Childhood and Adolescent Obesity: Prevention and Intervention conference sponsored by the Minnesota Obesity Center. The conference was held at the Metrodome Hotel Radisson in Minneapolis, MN.

June 10, 1997

Gary Wittert, MD, University of Adelaide, presented a seminar on "Regulation of body composition and thermogenesis: a marsupial model."

August 21, 1997

Catherine M. Kotz, PhD, Department of Food Science and Nutrition, UMN, and
James D. Pomonis, Graduate Program in Neuroscience, UMN, will present a joint seminar entitled "Use of Viral Tracing Techniques in the Brain: Meeting Report." Dr. Kotz and Mr. Pomonis recently attended a conference on Viral Infections in the CNS: Mechanisms of Action and Use in Defining Neural Circuits, sponsored by the Center for Brain Sciences and Health at Georgia State University, where they received instruction on using viral techniques to determine neurochemical pathways.

December 1, 1997

Eric Ravussin, PhD, Clinical Diabetes & Nutrition Section, NIH, presented a seminar entitled "Metabolic risk factors for weight gain: from physiology to genetics." Dr. Ravussin is a member of our External Scientific Advisory Committee and presented this seminar in conjunction with a site visit of our Center.
