Historical Archaeology Field School

19 June - 28 July 2000

The Minnesota Archaeological Research Program (MARP) is conducting an archaeological field school at the site of the early-nineteenth-century American Fur Company headquarters in Mendota, Minnesota-now the heart of the Minneapolis-St. Paul metro area. The site was an important center of commerce during the first half of the nineteenth century. For the past 30 years, the Fort Snelling-Mendota Historic Districts have been the focus of a research program directed towards understanding the social, political, and economic elements of this historic complex.

This year's field program will involve excavation around the Sibley House, built in 1835, and exploratory work in other areas of the historic complex. Excavation will be conducted using stratigraphic methods and recorded in the Harris matrix system. Fieldwork will be augmented by lectures and laboratory work. The course objective is to develop an understanding of archaeological method and theory through practical experience in preparation for a career in archaeology.

Three to six credits are available through the University of Minnesota Global Campus Program. A paid internship may be available to field school participants following completion of the course. Application deadline is 30 April 2000.
