Emelian Pugachov
Pugachov was a peasant who, in the 1770s, led a partially successful revolt
against the authority of Tsarina Catherine the Second (often called "the
Great"). After some initial local successes, Pugachov's revolutionary
band also managed to defeat a substantial punitive military force which
had been mounted against him. In the end Pugachov's rag-tag army was defeated
and he captured. He was executed by being drawn and quartered in a public
square.
