Unique Schedules
Student workers have unique schedules as they are doing class work for a number of courses and possibly working at another job for income.
* Remember:
- Students may need very specific hours
- Students are on a semester timeline
- Above all, remain flexible and consult about their changing needs
Energy and Motivation
Students bring a lot of energy and new ideas to an organization or project.
* Remember:
- Most are hard workers who want to get the best experience they can working in the “real world”
- If you give them guidance and opportunities, the returns on your investment will be worthwhile! |
Undergraduate Students
- Undergraduates are typically looking for part-time hours that are very flexible, as they have large course loads and classes throughout the day.
- Depending on how far along they are in their studies, undergraduates may be qualified to do everything from clerical work to basic research and data analysis.
- The best way to reach undergraduates is through posting a position on GoldPASS (the U of M's Monster.com-like job search and post engine), or through a career services office.
Graduate Students
- Graduate students can typically take on more hours than undergraduates, depending on their program and schedule. They also appreciate flexibility when it comes to hours, but take fewer classes and might be more available than undergraduates.
- Depending on their individual strengths and interests, graduate students are generally qualified to do high level research, data analysis, program evaluation, and other more involved projects.
- The best way to reach graduate students is through posting a position on GoldPASS (the U of M's Monster.com-like job search and post engine), through a particular program's email listserv, or through a career services coordinator who works in their program.
PhD Candidates
- Ph.D. candidates will be involved in their own research and dissertation writing, but may be available for hire on certain projects.
- Ph.D. candidates are experienced in research collection and analysis, program evaluation, and any projects involving high-level thinking.
- The best way to reach Ph.D. students is through posting a position on GoldPASS (the U of M's Monster.com-like job search and post engine), through their program's office or director of graduate studies.
Class Project
- Working with an entire class involves coordination with a professor or instructor. Classes are eager to work with "real-life" issues, programs, and questions-- and you will benefit from a whole class engaging with your project.
- Class projects can take many forms-- both undergraduate and graduate classes are potential partners for a project.
- Undergraduates may be suited for activities such as service learning or basic data analysis, while graduate students will be interested in more in-depth projects.
- If you are interested in working with a class, contact a professor who works in the field that your project is related to-- search the Expertise Database or search the University's main web site. Also, look at the University Neighborhood Network's page to search professors who are looking to involve community members.
