Need some extra help?

Determining details about student compensation can be confusing, especially if you are hiring the student as a University employee. If you need additional assistance, contact the HUP.

Unpaid Position

- Many students, particularly undergraduates, need to fulfill internship or practicum hours. Some may require their professor's involvement or approval, while others seek out opportunities on their own.

- Some graduate students need to complete "capstone" classes as part of their programs. These capstone classes are the culmination of their studies and may involve working with community partners on in-depth projects. Contact the Liaison, Kathie Doty (612-625-4383), for more information on capstone classes.

- Or to work with other graduate and undergraduate level classes, try searching the University Neighborhood Network's web site or contacting a professor by searching for your project's goals on the Expertise Database or University main page.

Paid Position

- If you hire the student worker as a County employee, you may determine what you offer for an hourly wage or stipend. If you hire the student worker as a Graduate Assistant, the University has a set range for the Graduate Assistant pay scale, which changes every year.

- These are typical pay ranges at the University for student workers:

          • Undergraduate: $8-13/hour
          • Graduate: $17-28
          • Ph.D.: similar to graduate pay, but can vary
