      The General Assembly,
 
      Noting that national parliaments work together at the international
level through the Inter-Parliamentary Union, their world organization, which
shares the principles and objectives of the United Nations,
 
      Considering that the activities of the Inter-Parliamentary Union
complement and support the work of the United Nations,
 
      Desirous of strengthening existing cooperation between the United
Nations and the Inter-Parliamentary Union and of giving it a new and adequate
framework,
 
      1.    Requests the Secretary-General to take the necessary steps to
conclude an agreement on cooperation between the two organizations which
should make provision for consultations, appropriate representation and
cooperation, in general as well as in specific fields, and to report to the
General Assembly at its fifty-first session on this matter;
 
      2.    Decides to include in the provisional agenda of its fifty-first
session the item entitled "Cooperation between the United Nations and the
Inter-Parliamentary Union".
