PART II, SECTION 9–
DEVELOPING STRATEGIES FOR OTHER DOMINANT ACTORS

USING MODULE 26 IN A TRAINING PROGRAM

MULTILATERAL TRADE AND INVESTMENT AGREEMENTS AND ESC RIGHTS

GO TO SECTION I - MODULE 26

The purpose of Module 26 is to provide an overview of multilateral trade and investment agreements as they relate to the enjoyment of ESC rights.

This module should help trainees understand/clarify for themselves:

  • the relevance of a human rights approach to advocacy with respect to these agreements;
  • development of a human rights framework that provides direction for this advocacy;
  • information regarding international coalitions of civil society organizations currently active around these agreements; and
  • challenges and opportunities confronting organizations seeking to protect ESC rights from the negative impacts of these agreements.

Suggested Methods

¨      Discussion: Newspaper clippings on the demonstrations during the World Trade Organization’s meeting in Seattle could be used for initiating discussion on the module. The discussion would help the trainer understand the level of knowledge of participants regarding multilateral trade and investment agreements and their impact on economic, social and cultural rights.
