SECTION 8– UNITED NATIONS MECHANISMS AND ESC RIGHT

USING MODULE 24 IN A TRAINING PROGRAM

UNITED NATIONS MECHANISMS AND ESC RIGHTS

GO TO SECTION I - MODULE 24

The purpose of Module 24 is to provide an overview of UN mechanisms for the protection and enforcement of ESC rights.  In addition, the module provides basic information on the work of UN specialized agencies, and specifically the work of the ILO.

This module should help trainees understand/clarify for themselves:

  • mechanisms available at the international level that can be utilized for purposes of advocacy and lobbying by ESC rights activists; and
  • a perspective for using international mechanisms.

Suggested Methods

¨      Case study: The experience of the Centre for Equality Rights in Accommodation (CERA) in using international law and mechanisms, which is reproduced in Module 24 could be given as a case study to initiate discussion by the participants.  Following the discussion, a presentation could be made on various UN mechanisms, covering their mandates, procedures, and the limitations in using them.

¨      Video: The users of this manual could also obtain a copy from IHRIP of its video Out Of Shadows, which deals with the Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights and how groups have effectively worked with the Committee to advance ESC rights.
