The 4th R, Creating a Human Rights Culture:
The Role of Service Learning, vol. 8 No. 1, Spring 1997.
Cada Pollo Con Su Rollo - Each Chick Has Its Place Activity

The activity, suitable for secondary classrooms and adaptable for younger students, was adapted and reprinted with permission from Amnesty International-Mexico. The illustrations were created by an unknown artist. The "Regular English" version of the articles of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights was developed several years ago by students at the Little House Alternative School in Dorchester, MA.

Instructions: Prepare 60 index cards: 30 with the UDHR articles and 30 with the illustrations on pages 12-13 (gifs). Divide the class into groups and give each group a portion of the cards. Students find the UDHR article that matches each picture. When all pictures have been matched, the groups share their results with the rest of the class.
(Translations for Spanish words used in the illustrations for Articles 6, 8, 20, and 30: ley=law, p¡o-p¡o=peep-peep, derechos humanos=human rights.)
