Land Purchased for AI Institute of Human Rights in Quetta, Pakistan
by Dr. Sher Shah Syed

Two successful cycling events, organized by AI-Pakistan, have raised funds to help realize the vision of a Human Rights Institute in Quetta, Pakistan. In the first event, cyclists travelled from Ziarat to Quetta, and in the second event from Quetta to Sibi.

As a result of these two events, AI-Pakistan was able to buy a piece of land in Quetta for the proposed Institute of Human Rights. This 420 square-yard piece of land, which cost approximately $13,000, is situated near Quetta Airport.

The next step is to raise funds to build a small building with basic facilities for a working Institute of Human Rights. This will cost approximately $50,000. Plans are underway for an international cycling event in July-August, 1998 to raise additional funds for the Institute. The route will be either from the Chinese border to the city of Gilgit, or from the Afghanistan border to the city of Quetta. Human rights workers from all over the world are invited to participate, help and give suggestions for this Institute.
