Congratulations to Nobel Peace Prize recipient Jody Williams

Amnesty International USA’s Human Rights Educators’ Network Steering Committee and The Fourth R Editorial Board would like to congratulate 1997 Nobel Peace Prize recipient Jody Williams and the International Campaign to Ban Landmines for their work on eliminating landmines worldwide.

Every year, more than 26,000 people, including numerous children, are killed or maimed by landmines. Sixty countries will gather this December in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada to sign a treaty to ban them, which is the only effective way to combat this deadly force. Unfortunately, the United States is not one of the sixty countries planning to sign.

"Schools Demining Schools" Web site:

This U. N. CyberSchoolBus & I*EARN project tackles the international problem of landmines. The project will include access to resources and information, access to teaching units, communication with schools designated for demining, e-mail question-and-answer sessions, and more. The project was launched in October 1997 and will continue through April 1998.
