Forced evictions

Commission on Human Rights decision 1996/104

At its 35th meeting, on 11 April 1996, the Commission on Human Rights, taking note of resolution 1995/29 of 24 August 1995 of the Sub-Commission on Prevention of Discrimination and Protection of Minorities, bearing in mind the work of other United Nations bodies on this issue, notably that of the United Nations Centre for Human Settlements (Habitat), and mindful of the need to avoid unnecessary duplication, decided, by 22 votes to 18, with 9 abstentions, to recommend to the Economic and Social Council, in the light of the conclusions of the United Nations Conference on Human Settlements (Habitat II), to be held in Istanbul in June 1996, to authorize the holding, at an appropriate date after Habitat II, of an expert seminar on the practice of forced evictions with a view to developing comprehensive human rights guidelines on development-based displacement.
