The University of Minnesota and the Women's Athletics Department received a total gift of $900,000 from Deborah Robbie Olson for the building of a new soccer facility to be named after her mother, the late Elizabeth Lyle Robbie, and a second endowed scholarship for a University of Minnesota soccer player. The $900,000 gift is the third-largest single gift ever received by the Women's Athletics Department. Olson's gift is in addition to the $1.2 million appropriated by the Minnesota State Legislature for a new soccer facility.
"I am privileged to be able to contribute to the continuing success of the Minnesota soccer program and of all women student-athletes at the University," Olson said. "Minnesotans should be proud of the true commitment and leadership our university has shown with its separate women's athletics department and its many accomplishments."
The new facility is 1 block away from it's previous site on Cleveland Ave. and seats 1,000 spectators. Along with the primary playing field and practice fields, the two-story main building contains restrooms, food services, athletic training, media, team and club room facilities. A ticket kiosk and plaza area are outside of the stadium. The Soccer Stadium was dedicated on Sunday, September 26, 1999.
"We are so thankful to Deborah Olson for her generous gift to our program," ex-head soccer coach Sue Montagne said. "A new, progressive facility is the final piece in making Minnesota soccer one of the most complete and successful programs in the country."
