Writing a Letter to the Editor

Take 10 minutes to write your own letter and let your neighbors know how the U makes your community a better place to live.

Step 1: Choose your letter theme, whether it's the value of public research, access to higher education, or your own personal story. Start with one of these sample letters if you like:

Step 2: Personalize your letter, adding relevant facts and concerns to make your letter unique.

Step 3: Send the letter to your local paper. Always include your name, address and daytime phone number so the newspaper can verify you as the author.

Letter-writing Tips

Keep your letter brief (100-250 words).

Only write about one topic.

State your connection to the U of M.

To improve the news value of your letter, mention a related story from the same paper.

Be as positive as you can be.
