University Relations

Office of Government and Community Relations

Research funding

The Office of Federal Relations works with the Minnesota delegation and higher education associations to advocate for increased funding for federal agencies that award competitive research grants.

University faculty and staff are highly successful in competing for federal research funding, and more than two-thirds of the nearly $620 million it attracts in sponsored research awards comes from federal government agencies. Of those federal funds, more than half comes from the National Institutes of Health and the National Science Foundation.

In 2005 the U opened its Academic and Corporate Relations Center (ACRC), which works with businesses worldwide to help the U research community connect with its private-sector peers to translate the U's potential for innovation into economically beneficial results.

Talking points

  • University researchers are driven to discover everything from new therapies for chronic diseases to the next generation of biofuels to the inner workings of the smallest particles of matter in our universe.
  • Federal funding for research is critical to the University and to its ability to serve the state, region and the country.
