Office for Fraternity & Sorority Life

Welcome to the U!

Congratulations on your acceptance to the University of Minnesota, and welcome to one of the most vibrant learning communities in the country. The University is committed to providing challenging and meaningful opportunities for you to enhance your educational experience and become prepared for your future.

I want to call your attention to the opportunities offered through the fraternities and sororities in our Greek community. While providing their members important social opportunities, the Greek chapters play lead roles in planning and developing major campus events, and they serve as engaged citizens through their work with neighborhood and other community organizations.

The University of Minnesota is proud of its relationship with the Greek community, and we have invested ourselves in that relationship. Recently, the University and Greek community signed a formal “Partnership Statement” which identifies key elements of our expectations as we jointly seek the goal of making the Greek community at the University of Minnesota a vital, successful component of our campus life for many years to come.

We have identified the following skills and characteristics as essential to your academic success and key to your future opportunities:

  • Responsibility and Accountability
  • Independence and Interdependence
  • Goal Orientation
  • Self-Awareness
  • Resilience
  • Appreciation of Differences
  • Tolerance of Ambiguity

My strong support for the Greek community is based on my belief that it provides significant opportunities for you to develop these skills. I encourage you to explore the information provided in this excellent resource, and I look forward to seeing you on campus soon.

Sincerely,

Jerry Rinehart
Vice Provost for Student Affairs
