GREAT EATS ON CAMPUS

Food. It's how we relax, relate, and reconnect - with ourselves, and with others.

University Dining Services offers one of the most unique dining opportunities of any college campus in the United States. We serve the food and beverage needs of the U of M community with our campus and residential restauarants, full service catering department and vending services. Our staff is dedicated to providing great customer service and a variety of quality foods.

Whether you choose to eat in one of our campus restaurants, residential restaurants, convenience stores or coffee shops, you’ll find something to suit your taste: soups, salads, vegetables, entrees and desserts as well as made-to-order delicatessen sandwiches, ethnic dishes, low-fat and low-carb options and specialty coffees. We serve our food in facilities where you can relax and eat.

UDS Challenges Diners to go Tray-less

In honor of Earth Day on Tuesday, April 22, University Dining Services piloted tray-less dining during dinner in the University’s six residential restaurants. UDS promoted tray-less dining to raise awareness on the environmental and wellness impact; going tray-less saves water, energy and reduces over consumption and food waste.

Nearly all 3,400 residential restaurant customers participated in the activity, saving 315 pounds of food waste or an average of 1.5 ounces per person. UDS gathered the data by weighing the amount of food waste at dinner on an average evening in the residential restaurants compared to waste collected at dinner on Earth Day.

UDS composts all leftover food waste in UDS residential restaurants on campus. Eco-friendly waste, such as food scraps, napkins, paper, cardboard materials and biodegradable packaging are collected daily and sent to the University compost site on the St. Paul campus. Since the program began in September 2007, UDS has collected 144 tons of compost.

University Dining Services Places 2nd in Annual
Recyclemania Competition

University of Minnesota Dining Services placed 2nd in the "Food Service Organics" category at the 2008 National Recyclemania competition this spring. Over 400 colleges from around the country participated in the competition.

During the 10-week contest which began in January, campuses completed in a variety of categories including waste minimization, recycling and food service organics (composting). Participating schools reported measurements in pounds to Recyclemania program organizers on a weekly basis.

Since its inception in 2001, RecycleMania has generated awareness and excitement for waste reduction at campuses across the country. RecycleMania is supported by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s WasteWise program and the National Recycling Coalition.
