hey y'all....my computer crashed (big time....BIG BIG BIG) so i don't think my comment went out on monday night...at least i don't see it there now, so i'm leaving one, even though the presentation is over with....nice job during the presentation....aside from taking 5 hours to read, your paper was very well done....i get more questions about bleaching than any other dental subject...i am still wondering how colgate's new brush on product works....anyone know?

How do most dentists feel about over-the-counter bleaching (like white-strips etc)? I have had some clinical instructors say that they like them, because patients like what they see and want more, so do office bleaching; while others don't advise it. Is there a consencious? (that is spelled wrong, but oh well)

Great paper- bleaching is the subject I think we get asked about the most. It is interesting to explore the pros and cons. Yes you get whiter teeth, but the natural contrasting of colors is sacrificed. I am looking forward to the presentation...in 10 minutes!

Great paper- although bleaching is inexpensive and a good option for some people, I think that too many people are doing it. It makes everyone look the same and the natural contrast in the color of the teeth is lost.

I'm looking foward to hearing your presentation, I've already had a lot of questions from patients about bleaching and hopefully I'll know more after your presentation.

Interesting paper. I am looking forward to the presentation especially with regards to the affects bleaching has on restorations already in place. Had a question about using the blockout material seems like everyone has a different idea upstairs.

Great paper people. I'm interested in seeing the clinical trials that you did. Whitening is certainly going to be a big part of our practices when we get out.

Great paper, you had alot of very good information. I just went to see a dental office with my PCG group last week who used an inoffice light gun to whiten teeth (bright smile) This took around 2 hours to complete and had a cost of over 1000 it seems like a steep price for something you can get with a box of whitening strips.

I am curious as to whether or not bleaching affects the integrity of restorations in place at the time of bleaching. Specifically, characteristics such as surface quality/integrity and promoting breakdown of restorative materials.

I am routinely asked about bleaching by my family and friends. Do any certain types of existing restorations lead to increased sensitivity? Do any systemic conditions predispose a person to an increased level of sensitivity following bleaching?

Great Paper group 9! You did a very good job on covering both the pros and cons of bleaching. It important to know both of these so that we are able to better educate our patients who are interested in bleaching.

What can I say...excellent paper. I'm interested to hear more about the brite smile system, because I visited a clinic two weeks ago that uses it all the time. It's a fast and easy way to bleach teeth.

Excellent work Group 9! I particularly liked the section where you compared all the available bleaching products - it's always easier to choose a material when you have all the information right infront of you. Question: does the bleaching process make your teeth more susceptible to staining throughout the duration of the treatment since the dentinal tubules are opened up?
Jessica Inglis <ingl0011@umn.edu>

A truly excellent job, group 9! It's amazing how well the paper was written. It feels like a breeze to read through. In addition it covers wide aspects of bleaching, and very easy for us to reference on for such an everyday topic that touches all of us.
Lan Zhou <zhou0039@tc.umn.edu>

Good paper group 9. I like the topics you chose in the paper. The effects on restorations, dental sensitivity, and the free radical release is all interesting. After the presentation I am hoping to be able to give my patients the most info on the pros and cons of the different types of bleaching.

In regards to the complications of external bleaching...gingival irritation, release of ions, weakening of enamal, and likely some other areas, which have not yet come to the surface...I wonder how long it will be before we have to answer tough questions to patients, just like we have to answer questions about fluoride and amalgam.
MICHAEL NELSON <nels1959@tc.umn.edu>
- Tuesday, December 03, 2002 at 06:16:31 (CST)
Regarding tooth sensitivity, I was wondering if you read any data about if a patient has had sensitivity issues previous to bleaching, does the peroxide make the sensitivity worse? If fluoride is used during the treatment, does the peroxide still have the same effects?
Roxane Huber <hube0079@tc.umn.edu>
- Tuesday, December 03, 2002 at 00:56:12 (CST)
Good paper guys. The parts on the adverse effects of bleaching were really interesting. With all the over-the-counter products on the market now, and society's concern with having whiter teeth, I'm sure we'll start to see a lot more signs of people abusing bleaching in our practices.
Eric Knaff <knaf0006@umn.edu>

I found it very interesting that shorter bleaching periods are probably as successful as longer periods. I can't wait to learn more during the presentation!

Great Job group #9! As a member of this group, my understanding on the free radical is greatly widened. This topic is especially interesting to me because I myself is doing a long term bleaching, what free radicals can do is a direct concern to me.
Lan Zhou <zhou0039@tc.umn.edu>

I enjoyed your paper. I have a question about one of my patients who has tobacco stains on his teeth.
Can extrinsic bleaching take care of this? How about crest whitestrips?
Adena Borodkin <boro0038@umn.edu>
- Monday, December 02, 2002 at 22:49:00 (CST)
The paper was a great overview of everything that is involved in the bleaching process. It will be interesting to see if the recommendations change for bleaching with the long-term studies that are being conducted presently. Great review of the different products on the market; the chart will be helpful for private practice.

Wow, this group is way better than the rest! The paper was so enjoyable that I found myself reading it over and over. I especially liked the part about orthodontic considerations and bleaching. I am willing to bet that their presentation will be steller!!
Ryan Tietz <tiet0020@tc.umn.edu>
- Monday, December 02, 2002 at 22:24:01 (CST)
Thank you, group 9, for a comprehensive comparison of various bleaching techniques. It seems everyone wants to know about tooth whitening, or they want me to order Crest white strips. Have you read anything about the new Colgate "brush-on" whitening product? It seems like it is just another gimic, like "whitening" toothpaste. I'm looking forward to your presentation tomarrow.

Great paper group #9! I found it particularly interesting that Japanese-style fermented soy sauce has been found to have an inhibitory effect on carcinogenesis by reducing hydrogen peroxide concentration in human polymorphonuclear leukocytes.

Great paper. I thought it was very well organized. One question though...can we do bleaching procedures in clinic? Say I wanted to use opalescence xtra boost for a one hour bleaching procedure...could I do it in school...do they have the stuff...would the profs let me do it?

- Monday, December 02, 2002 at 18:16:39 (CST)
Great paper! It was very complete, and I really liked your tables that compared different brands of bleaching materials. I also thought that your organization of the paper was very clear, especially with the information about bleaching side effects.

The Brite Smile method of tooth whitening looks as though it is a nifty way bleaching. I saw a little special on the system and it went right along with what it says in your paper. About one hour and the whitening should last for several years. I am interested to learn if we can use this at the University or learn more about the product. It looks like something auxillary personel could easily handle out in private practice.

Does the hydrogen peroxide in whitening toothpastes actually have a whitening effect? I think I heard once that the whitening effect of whitening toothpastes is mainly due to a courser grit which removes surface stains.
David Gilmer <gilm0069@tc.umn.edu>
- Monday, December 02, 2002 at 11:18:20 (CST)
Good paper group 9. Whitening seems to be a topic on many patients minds so I am glad that we are having a presentation that covers all of the possiblities. Since the Colgate whitening product is so new there probably isn't much research but how would it work if you let it dry for "30 secs" and that is it. Doesn't the product get washed away with saliva? It seems like it wouldn't work and have the same "whitening effects" as a whitening toothpaste.
Sarah Como <scomo@umn.edu>
- Monday, December 02, 2002 at 11:17:00 (CST)
Very complete paper. I enjoyed reading about this hot topic. Good pros and cons for the different bleaching systems.

I thought your paper was extremely well written because of its comprehensive nature of reviewing all the aspects of bleaching. In particlular, the section on the different forms of bleaching techniques and potential complications were very informative. How does bleaching one's teeth affect the placement of composites or porcelain in the future, i.e. are there corresponding shades guides to match the color of the whitened teeth? In addition, approximately how long does the whitening last?
Devin Croft <crof0017@tc.umn.edu>

Great review on whitening products. A day doesn't do by that someone doesn't ask me about whitening thier teeth. It was good that the side effects were also discussed. It seems that everyone focuses on the whitening without thinking of possible consequences.
Matthew Berg <berg0522@tc.umn.edu>

Great paper group 9! It was great to read more about tooth bleaching because so many patients, friends, and family members have asked me about it. I look forward to hearing more about over-the-counter bleaching products in your presentation.

I look forward to hearing about the bleaching products available both professionally and commercially. It seems like some of the OTC regimens have no chance of making a smile look more white.

I enjoyed this paper. More imformation on clinical aspects of bleaching need to be emphasized in pre-clinic. It was also good to know the research out on how bleaching effects composite restorations. Since this is the most likely restoration we will encounter during bleaching.
Bradley Morrison <morr0188@tc.umn.edu>
- Wednesday, November 27, 2002 at 12:20:28 (CST)
Good job. I found the risk aspects an interesting aspect of the paper. Since many of our patients are smokers, it seems a good reminder to us regarding the associated risk of bleaching agents and tobacco use.

Great paper! I enjoyed reading all of it!! My favorite part was the charts on all the different bleaching products and information about them. It is nice to get info that allows me to make my own decision on what product to use.

Intersting info on the effect bleaching has on amalgam- I was wondering if patients with amalgams might experience increased sensitivity due to exposing a nonbonded restoration to whitening material?

Good paper. I am more interested about the sensitivity issue dealing with in office bleaching. There are many in-office bleaching systems on the market, but many dentists are hesitant to use them because of sensitivity.

Bleaching techniques are such a popular topic these days. The first question I am always asked after I say that I am in dental school is a tooth bleaching question. For this reason I think it is important that we are aware of all the available and up and coming bleaching options and their effectiveness. Great paper group 9!
