Welcome to your first didactic course in Pediatric Dentistry. Dent 5501/DH 3134 is designed as a survey of the clinical aspects of Pediatric Dentistry. The purpose of this course is to emphasize basic information regarding early childhood development and care for children that does not require advanced knowledge and competence in clinical dentistry. The course lectures are organized around the subjects listed below. You should complete this course with an understanding of:

• Pediatric Dentistry as a career and specialty
• Growth and development
• Development of the primary dentition and the transitional dentition
• Dental anatomy and anomalies
• Dental caries diagnosis and risk management
• Introduction of children to their first dental visit
• Behavior management
• Communicating with parents and caregivers
• Sealants, resins, amalgams, and stainless steel crowns
• Pulp diagnosis and treatment
• Interceptive Orthodontics and space maintenance
• Dental trauma
• Child abuse and neglect
• Dental health perspectives for children
• Minor Pediatric oral lesions
• Emergency management of children and adolescents
• Pediatric and adolescent problem solving and treatment planning
• Common medical concerns and special needs for children and adolescents
