Over the past five years the pace of the public engagement movementin higher education has quickened. Moreover, colleges and universities are beginning to conceive of public engagement as more than off-hours "voluntarism." Attention has shifted to the public meanings of the work of individuals, disciplines and institutions. This conceptual shift draws from theory building and practical efforts at the University of Minnesota, as noted in the key documents listed below.
