COPE Subcommittee on Civic Learning and Student Engagement
November 20, 2002

Present: Brandt, Deinard, Frazier, Marchesani, Stubblefield, Swan
Absent:  Coburn, Sampson.

We talked about identifying activities that we could champion and/or undertake ourselves with a focus on activities that could be accomplished within the academic year. Items we discussed included:

Follow up to SCEP Subcommittee Report about the nature of civic engagement/civic learning within disciplines
- Discussion/focus groups with graduate students - Frazier, Boyt
- Discussion/focus groups with undergraduate students - Brandt,
- Stubblefield, Coburn, SwanExplore with Minnesota Extension the possibility of student summer internships with placements in greater Minnesota
- Swan has contacted Extension.  They have requested funding from
- COPE for a pilot program for summer 2003. When students are doing community based research work, should examining committees have a community representative?
- Swan has contacted Vic Bloomfield, Dean of the Graduate School,
who has responded:

The Grad School Deans and Directors thought this was an excellent
idea, and in fact it's one for which there are a number of
precedents when professionals from the community are brought in
to serve on committees. The difference here is that the community
people may not have academic credentials, but that should not
prevent them from serving as non-voting members. To add a
non-voting member to the committee simply requires agreement
between the student and the DGS, with designation of that member
as non-voting on the degree form submitted to the Grad School.
It would generally not be appropriate for the community person
to be a voting member, unless his/her credentials were such as
to qualify for membership on the graduate faculty in the program.

Development of graduate certificate and undergraduate minor in nonprofit management and leadership.

Professor Melissa Stone, HHH, has been chairing committee.
Swan will contact Stone.

- Laurel Hirt from CCLC is working on this project.
