While the subcommittee has not met recently, there has been continued
progress on a number of initiatives. Much of the progress has come
from the empowerment of individuals who see how their ideas and
interest can further the broader University commitment to Civic
Engagement.

Civic Learning/Student Engagement Charge Statement
- implications of civic engagement for curriculum, learning experiences
(including service learning and other forms of civic education),
and student life at the undergraduate and graduate levels;
- proposals for strengthening civic learning in particular units.
- student participation as an aspect of the engaged university;
- identify benefits to students of an engaged university;
practical proposals for expanding student participation in engaged
activities
Things in progress
Strengthening the University Community Connection
Program to place students in intern positions with communities/county
extension directors. Funded on a pilot basis by COPE. Potential
projects have been identified. Diana Martenson has been the person
making this happen.
Recognition by transcript notation for students with significant
community service / service learning involvement, e.g., Community
Service Scholar
Laurel Hirt from CCLC has identified a working group from undergraduate
colleges in the Twin Cities that will be meeting later this spring
to identify criteria for recognizing students and working with the
Registrar on administrative procedures. While this work focuses
on the Twin Cities campus, results will be shared with coordinate
campuses as a possible model for them.

Mary McEvoy Award for Public Engagement and Leadership
Established by GAPSA under leadership of Chris Frazier.
Impress the President
At the last University Senate meeting, President Bruininks singled
out this event as one of the highlights of the inauguration week
and indicated his interest in making this an annual event. Leadership
for the event came from students.
When students are doing community based research work, examining
committees may include a community representative
Enhanced service learning
EVPP has made financial commitment to CCLC in CLA which serves
as campus wide resource for service learning courses.
Development of graduate certificate and undergraduate minor in
nonprofit management and leadership.
Work is further along with respect to graduate certificate.
EPICS - Engineering Projects in Community Service
Model from Purdue with related programs at eight other universities.
"Undergraduate students work with community service and education
organizations to design, build and implement engineering-based solutions
to real -world problems." EVPP office will initiate discussion
with IT and other possible colleges. |
