Header and footer requirements

All campuses, colleges, departments, and units conducting official University of Minnesota business on umn.edu are required to use the template header and footer, both on websites and on blogs created on UThink.

The template header and footer, as well as the umn.edu domain, may only be used by a campus, college, unit, department, or center to conduct official University business.

See Brand Policy: Trademarks, Logos, Color, and Seal.

Template header

The standard template header is composed of campus links in the top right; the block M, wordmark, and Driven to Discover graphic on the left; One Stop and myU graphic buttons on the right with the search bar below.

Header example.

Links to myU and One Stop are required either with or without the buttons. Exceptions can be made for sites that have audiences who would not need or be able to use the myU and One Stop sites.

The header must use a maroon background. The block M and wordmark combinations with or without Driven to Discover must be used as they are; they cannot be reduced or enlarged in size.

The search field must be included in the header. The default behavior for the search will return tabbed results for sites on the Twin Cities campus, blogs, and people. The search can be customized to also include your unit's search results.

Note: The block M and University wordmark should not appear anywhere other than in the header on a umn.edu website.

Small Screen Version

For websites built to support small screen mobile devices (screen width less than 640px), an alternative header may be used. The small screen header is composed of a smaller block M, wordmark, and Driven to Discover graphic on the left and a search button on the right.

The search button may go to a separate search page or show a search field when clicked.

The block M and wordmark image file and other assets for the small screen header may be found here

Placement

Use of the template ensures proper placement of the wordmark and promotes consistency that assures visitors they are still on a U of M site as they move about our web space.

Graphics

Use the graphics included with the template downloads. Never alter the graphics or change the color of the block M, wordmark, Driven to Discover, or background. Never create alternative versions of the template header.

Template footer

The web template footer combines required elements, such as the EEO and copyright statements, best practice elements like date last modified, and links to commonly requested campus information.

Footer exammple.

The footer links must be used as they are. If your unit would like to add unit-specific information in the footer area, add the unit footer option.

A systemwide footer is available for download for sites that provide systemwide information.

Small Screen Version

For websites built to support small screen devices (screen width less than 640px), an alternative footer may be used. The small screen footer contains only the University copyright statement. Note that additional links like Maps and Directions, Directories, etc., may be required in the future as these sites become optimized for small screen devices
