Thank you for your interest in the Biomedical Engineering Graduate Program at the University of Minnesota. The application deadline for fall admission is January 10, 2008 although applications submitted later may be considered. Only under special circumstances are applications considered for spring and summer admission.
Each individual’s application, supporting material and background information will be considered holistically to determine eligibility for admission. The following is the admission criteria and instructions for applying to the program, which includes links to application forms and related websites:
Step #1 – Apply Yourself: Online Graduate School application
- Completed Application form: Be sure to give your full name, no initials please. List your family/surname first, and your given name second to ensure that it is properly processed. Also, you must list your nationality on the application form.
- Letter of Intent/Statement of Purpose: Consists of a 1-2 page essay regarding applicant’s motivation, intellectual skills and suitability for study in the program.
- Supplemental Information: (Optional) Resume/CV and Diversity Statement
- Three letters of Recommendation may be submitted online or mailed to the Biomedical Engineeering Office..
- Mail to the BME Office. Sealed and preferably on the institution's letterhead. Please include the following coversheet with your letters: (word)or (PDF);
- Online submission. An email will be sent to the online recommendation provider with an access code and instructions on how to proceed with the online recommendation.
- Application fee: ($55 for US applicants and permanent residents, $75 for foreign applicants). This fee cannot be waived or deferred, and it is not refundable. The application process cannot begin until the application fee has been received.

- Official Transcript(s) from all universities/colleges you have attended. If your official transcript is not in English, an official English translation must be provided in addition to the original language version. The preferred minimum performance level for an applicant's cumulative GPA is 3.2. Applicants with a lower GPA will be considered but admission is unlikely.
- GRE scores Preferred Minimum Performance Levels: Verbal: 500, Quantitative 700, Analytical: 650 or 4.5. Please visit the Graduate Record Examination website for information. Institutional Code is 6874; Departmental Code is 1603.
- TOEFL scores for international applicants only. Preferred Minimum Performance Levels: 575 paper, 230 computer, 4.0 TWE, 79 Internet-based Testing (IBT); or 6.5 on the IELTS; or 80 on the MELAB. The TOEFL, MELAB, or IELTS is required of all international applicants whose native language is not English. International applicants who have completed 24 quarter credits/16 semester credits (within the past 24 months) in the United States are exempt from this requirement.

- Photocopy of Transcript(s) and GRE score (unofficial or photocopies are acceptable)
- Three letters of Recommendation may be mailed to the Biomedical Engineering Office or submitted online.
The Graduate Program in Biomedical Engineering cannot consider any application that has not been processed by the Graduate School.
All prospective full-time Ph.D. and Plan A/thesis M.S. students are automatically considered for financial aid. (Typically no financial aid is offered to part-time students or full-time students pursuing a Plan B/non-thesis M.S.) There is no need to fill out a special financial aid application for this program.
