Plan A Masters
Note:
All courses must be at the 5000 level or higher unless approved by the DGS
All electives must be at least 3 credit courses unless approved by the DGS
The Plan A Masters requires completion of a minimum of 35 semester credits, including 25 credits
of classroom work and 10 thesis credits. The thesis must be based on research
done by the student in collaboration with his/her advisor. The Plan A program
must include the following:
BMEn
Core
2 courses selected from the following list:
BMEn 5001 Advanced Biomaterials
BMEn 5101 Advanced Bioelectricity/Instrumentation
BMEn 5201 Advanced Biomechanics
BMEn 5311 Advanced Biomedical Transport Processes
BMEn 5351 Cell Engineering
BMEn 5401 Biomedical Imaging
Biology Electives
2 courses, may include BMEn 5501
“Technology” Electives
2 courses offered in the Institute
of Technology, 1 which must be in engineering
Technology Electives are courses in engineering, physical sciences and mathematics offered in the Institute of Technology, or courses outside of IT that have predominantly mathematics, physical science, and/or engineering content (require pre-approval of the DGS).

The electives must include a minimum of 6 credits in a minor or related field involving engineering, mathematics, the physical sciences, or the biological sciences. A minor must be approved by the DGS of the program granting the minor (which is certified on the transcript, unlike the related field option, which is not). Students are advised to determine appropriate courses for fulfillment of minor requirements during their first semester of study. Students choosing a related field in place of a minor must take at least one 8000-level elective.

Internship
With the consent of the adviser, a student may arrange a 3-credit industrial
internship, which requires a minimum of nine hours per week of supervised lab
or industrial experience unrelated to the student’s normal employment.
Submission of a project proposal and final report to the advisor and DGS is
required. The advisor is responsible for overseeing the internship and providing
the final grade.
Oral Exam
The M.S. candidate takes a final oral examination in defense of the Plan A thesis
or Plan B project. The M.S. examination committee must consist of three faculty
members; two from the Biomedical Engineering Graduate Faculty and one from the
minor or related field. Current Graduate School policy is this exam must be
closed to the public. In order to ensure appropriate questions will be asked
at the M.S. final defense, the student must provide a set of the relevant U
of M BMEn core course syllabi to the examination committee (a set for each year
will be kept on file in the Graduate Program office) along with the supplemental
degree program form. Before the final oral examination, the approved Degree
Program Transmittal must be on file in the Graduate School. A student pursuing
Plan A must submit a Thesis Title Page to the Graduate School in order to receive
all of the necessary final examination paperwork. A student pursuing Plan B
may go to the Graduate School to request final examination paperwork after approval
of the Degree Program Transmittal and when ready for the final oral examination.
The BME Grad Program requires
a minimum grade of B- for any course to be included on the Degree Program Transmittal
for the M.S. degree. In addition, the overall GPA of courses on the Degree Program
Transmittal must be at least 2.8. Progress toward the M.S. degree is deemed
satisfactory if the student has completed the coursework by the end of the second
semester, initiated research during the second semester, and submitted and defended
the thesis or project by the end of two years from the date of initial registration
in the Graduate School. Also, by the end of the first academic year of study,
an M.S. student must file a Degree Program Transmittal, which is the formal
statement of committee composition and coursework for inclusion in the degree.
A supplemental departmental form available from http://www1.umn.edu/bme/NewBMEwebsite\BME%20Site\html\students.html must also be completed and submitted to the DGS for review along with the Degree
Program Transmittal. The lack of satisfactory progress as defined above is due
cause for termination from the BME Grad Program.
