Summary
The
Information Systems Auditor position is the information systems
entry level position within the internal audit department of the
University of Minnesota. Incumbents are expected to have very little
practical experience in information systems auditing. Work assigned
to incumbents will generally be well defined and performed under
close supervision. Decision making authority vested in this position
is limited to structuring individual work assignments on a day-to-day
basis.
Job
Description
As
an Information Systems Auditor, the incumbent is expected to:
-
Gain
a working knowledge of the University of Minnesota: with a focus
on its business processes; policies and procedures; governance
practices; and regulatory obligations which relate to information
systems issues.

Develop
proficiency in basic audit principles, skills and techniques
so routine information systems audits are competently and efficiently
performed, and in accordance with professional and departmental
standards.

Develop
an understanding of information systems internal control concepts
and demonstrate the ability to apply them in less complex information
systems audits.

Learn
to recognize easily identifiable business risks and make appropriate
recommendations for addressing them.
-
Learn
the types and quantity of information/evidence needed to complete
assigned audit tasks, how to efficiently obtain such information,
analyze it within the context of the audit objectives, and to
formulate appropriate subsequent actions.

Demonstrate
the ability to document relevant facts and information to support
the auditor's testing and conclusions so other reviewers can
follow the auditor's logic and methodology.

Follow
work instructions, seeking guidance from supervising staff when
clarification of assigned tasks is needed.

Complete
work assignments independently as part of a team project.

Interact
effectively with a wide variety of people in a wide variety
of settings.

Demonstrate
effective time management skills by completing assignments within
time budgets and calendar schedules.

Ability
to communicate effectively both verbally and through written
material.

Engage
in professional development activities, including completion
of a professional certification program.
The
Auditor position has no supervisory responsibilities, although incumbents
may give work assignments or directions to staff support personnel
or student interns.
Incumbents
generally interact with first line operating and supervisory personnel,
although some interaction with higher level employees may occur
when directed by the Information Systems Manager.
Incumbents
must be comfortable working in ambiguous and/or stressful situations.
Flexibility and the ability to change priorities quickly are often
required of this position.

Periodic
in-state travel may be required.
Overtime may be required occasionally to complete work assignments
on time.
Preferred
Skills and Designations
We
would prefer that the incumbent have some or all of the following
designations and skills:

Have
or pursuing a CISA, CPA or CIA certification

Understanding
of audit process
-
Skills
in using Microsoft windows based software

Knowledge
of Novell, UNIX and Apple operating systems
-
Knowledge
of network firewall concepts
-
SAS
programming skills.
Limited
audit or Information Systems experience, demonstrated academic success
and business related course work, and Internship experiences are
not required but would be advantageous.
