Major Gary Mundfrom is a native of Spring Valley, Minnesota. He was commissioned as an Engineer officer from the University of Minnesota Army ROTC in 1989 and received a Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry in 1990 from the College of Biological Sciences. He was awarded a Master of Science in Environmental Engineering from the University of Minnesota Civil Engineering department in 1997.

He has been assigned to a variety of positions in the United States Army Reserve and Minnesota Army National Guard to include Platoon Leader, Company Executive Officer, two Company Commands, Battalion Adjutant, Battalion Operations Officer and Brigade Operations Officer. While assigned as the Battalion Operations Officer with the 2nd Battalion, 194th Armor, MAJ Mundfrom was forward deployed to Bosnia-Herzegovina as part of Operation Joint Forge. His battalion was responsible for providing a stable and secure environment in the vicinity of the cities of Brcko, Bijeljina and Gradacac.

MAJ Mundfrom's current assignment is as the Recruiting Operations Officer, University of Minnesota - Twin Cities. His awards include the Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal with "M" device, the Sapper Tab and the United States Armor Association's Order of St. George.
