Antivirus and Firewall Software

ADCS has a license with Symantec Corp. to provide its AntiVirus® and Symantec Client Security® (SCS) software to eligible students, faculty, and staff of all campuses of the University of Minnesota.

Eligibility

The software may be used on departmental computers and student, faculty, and staff personal computers, provided the following conditions are met.

You may install Symantec Client Security (including Symantec AntiVirus):

  • on any computer paid for with University of Minnesota funds and owned by the U of MN
  • on one computer owned by any current University of Minnesota student, faculty, or staff for personal use

Alumni and retired faculty are not eligible to download or purchase this software as part of the University's agreement.

To download this software, you will need your University Internet ID and password.

IMPORTANT Installation Steps

  1. Download the Symantec software completely.
(Or, you may have purchased it on CD.)
  2. Disconnect your computer from the Internet and any local networks.
  3. Uninstall all other antivirus software, e.g., McAfee, Virex, previous versions of Symantec (Norton) AntiVirus.
  4. Install the Symantec software you downloaded (or purchased on CD).

Keep the software up to date!

These Symantec products contain a LiveUpdate component that connects via the Internet to Symantec and checks for updates to the software, including virus definitions and occasional product fixes. Without the latest virus definitions, your computer is not protected against the latest viruses and malware threats.

After you install the Symantec software, please check its LiveUpdate settings. We recommend you set its update schedule to attempt an update every day at a time when your computer is likely to be on and connected to the Internet.

Symantec (Norton) AntiVirus

This is the AntiVirus product required on computers in the residence halls (ResNet).

You may download the software or purchase it on campus for a small media fee.

notes

* NAV 9 and Mac OS X 10.2 "Jaguar"
Immediately after installing Norton AntiVirus, run LiveUpdate instead of restarting your computer. This will prevent a security error message. Once you have run LiveUpdate, restart your computer. (To run LiveUpdate, navigate in Finder to the Norton AntiVirus folder and launch LiveUpdate.)
** SAV 10.2.0 for Mac OS X
· This is the latest version of SAV available through our software license program. Norton Antivirus 11.0 for Mac is a consumer retail version only.
· Do not install SAV to, or run SAV from, a disk formatted as UFS or Case-Sensitive HFS+. Generally, this is an issue only if you specifically chose to reformat your disk with these options.

Purchase on CD for $6.00

The CDs are a good option for modem users, since downloading the software via a modem may take 1-2 hours. The CDs are available at all Technology helpdesks and at UCS, provided the purchaser is qualified.

Symantec Client Security

Symantec Client Security is the latest release of Symantec's AntiVirus product that includes a Personal Firewall with Intrusion Detection, which helps help protect computer systems from network intruder attacks. You can install just the antivirus software or the full firewall plus antivirus software combination. Wherever possible we recommend installing the full product. Note that this product is not available for Windows 95 nor is it available for the Macintosh platform, but we continue to offer Symantec AntiVirus (see above) for these platforms.

Configure the Personal Firewall

After you install the full SCS product you will be presented with various screens as you attempt to connect to various services on the network. You will also be informed when something attempts to connect to your computer. In general, it is best to follow the suggested action. However, there may be services for which you will need to change the default and either accept or reject the attempted connection. If you have questions about any of the options that are presented please call 1-HELP (612-301-4357) for assistance. Be cautious in using the personal firewall. It is possible to get the firewall set to a state such that you will be unable to communicate at all.
